Why should we recycle construction waste?
Construction wastes are within the dry material category and
are usually sent right to the landfill when their lifecycle has been ended.
Environment Canada gives an estimate that over 9 million tons of construction
debris is buried each year in Canada. While looking at the quantity seems
enormous, we have to take into consideration that this type of material sent to
landfill are mostly toxic and not so biodegradable.
Sending material right to the landfill looks more and more like an old
fashioned decision. When landfill sites will be filled, we will need to go farther
to dig new sites, bringing higher costs to transport our residential and
industrial waste over there. The cost increases will reflect to our tax
accounts, on top of increasing our carbon footprint that contributes to the
overheating of the planet. Planning to reuse and recycle our waste is a fair
and concrete gesture that we can all support so our children will inherit a
cleaner planet.
